Lost and Found:
New Works from
Charlie Edmiston
May 12 – June 23, 2023

Edmiston’s first solo exhibition in Germany, presents a new body of work produced specifically to exist in harmony with the unique architectural environment of PERG. This series continues the artist’s dialogue between the compositional conventions of painting and the material presence of relief sculpture. Each piece is informed by one of two conceptual processes: artwork that functions within the comfortable context of the pictorial rectangle, and those that abandon that structure for a freeform, self-shaped assemblage.

Whether dwelling in organized containment or testing the freedom of unbound forms, certain of Edmiston’s shapes and colors call out to harmonious counterparts found across the various rectangles and freeform pieces. They are never exact duplicates, but do evoke a sense of connection and continuity of intention. In essence, visual echoes, functioning in a way similar to musical motifs, unifying the overall collection.

The artist has further considered the interplay of contained and uncontained modes of display in the unique architectural space of PERG. Edmiston’s duality finds another echo in the gallery’s own blend of pristine new construction playing counterpoint to the building’s coarse industrial bones. These sensory spatial elements provide an energetic context for exploring the edges and boundaries of these exciting and elegant new works.
